Article on Dodging the Pension Disaster

Here is the url to great article that explains the mechanics of the pension problems besetting cities and other government agencies:

http://www.nationalaffairs.com/publications/detail/dodging-the-pension-disaster

Some details about Richardson pension spending:

Subject: RE: information about 10 year trends in the city of richardson- revealing= attached their report which is rather telling
To put some words around the numbers-population and per capita income rose just a tad, but
General government spending rose 138%
Annual pension cost rose 215
Annual pension cost per active employee is $13, 500
Amount owed to each active employee for the pension obligation is $266,000
The debt of the city rose more than the rate of employee growth, per capita, inflation
Our property taxes rose a lot faster than our own income
They do get credit for holding the number of employees constant at 1,000= but their costs have risen faster than inflation
And they have to do something about the pension and post employment health care= most private sector employers do not offer it- and at best, they contribute $2000 a year to the 401k plan
The city has an employer should not have a continuing obligation to an employee upon termination for pensions, health care= and the employee should assume investment risk= a la a defined contribution plan
